Interlock kits allow homeowners to safely power their homes via a portable gas generator during a power outage. The interlock is a mechanical lock that is installed on an electrical panel to prevent a generator from back-feeding electrical power back to the utility lines. Preventing back-feeding is important for the safety of utility workers that may be repairing downed electrical lines. Interlock kits also prevent portable gas generators and main electrical power lines from feeding electrical panels at the same time; only one source of electrical power can be feeding an electrical panel at a time.
A typical interlock kit installation includes the following:
- Installation of the mechanical interlock kit on the electrical panel.
- Installation of a generator double-pole breaker.
- Installation of EMT conduit.
- Installation of a power inlet box.
- Installation of the generator circuit’s wires.
Installation costs range between $450 to $1600, depending on the complexity of the installation.
