Interlock Kit Installation Services

Portable gas generators are great alternatives to whole-house standby generators. They are versatile, mobile, affordable, and can be quite powerful. To take full advantage of the benefits of a portable gas generator as an emergency backup device, it must be hooked up to a house’s electrical panel in conjunction with a safety device known as an interlock kit. Hooking up a generator directly to an electrical panel eliminates the need to run extension cords from the generator into the house to power loads, and it allows for the powering of loads that cannot be run from extension cords, such as ceiling lights, ceiling fans, and air conditioners.

Interlock Kit

An interlock kit is a piece of hardware that allows the safe use of a portable gas generator to energize an electrical panel during a power outage. Energizing an electrical panel without an interlock kit poses two main safety concerns: 1) the voltage generated by the portable generator will backfeed and energize the utility lines and transformers that may be being worked on by utility workers, posing an electrical shock hazard to them, 2) a generator that is backfeeding an electrical panel while the utility power is restored will be severely damaged, and any people nearby can be seriously injured. For these reasons, it is extremely important that a generator never be used to energize an electrical panel without the use of an interlock kit or manual transfer switch.

Pricing

The cost of a typical installation of an interlock kit with favorable conditions, including labor and materials, is $450. This includes the installation of: 1) the interlock kit, 2) a 30 or 50 A inlet box near the electrical panel, 3) a generator double-pole breaker, and 4) conduit and wiring.

Factors that can increase the cost of the installation include: 1) the distance between the electrical panel and the inlet box, 2) lack of space in the electrical panel for the generator’s double-pole breaker, and 3) the brand of the electrical panel given that interlock kits are not manufactured for older models and brands of electrical panels.
